Veterans United Home Loans and Veterans United Foundation partner with Homes for Our Troops to help build 100 homes over next three years

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Veterans United Home Loans, and its charitable arm, Veterans United Foundation, announced they formed a three-year, $500,000 partnership with Homes for Our Troops, a national nonprofit. The partnership will help build 100 specially adapted homes for severely injured service members. Megan Sievers, director of Veterans United Foundation, announced the partnership Saturday, March 2, at the ceremony welcoming Master Sgt. John Hayes and his family into their new home in St. Augustine, Fla. The home was the 125th donated to a service member by Homes for Our Troops since 2004. "John and heroes like him who have suffered severe injuries need a place to call home that works for them," Sievers said. "At the end of the day when we leave John and his family at home, it is not about how much we raised, but that we did it together." Hayes was on his fourth deployment when he lost his legs and suffered life-threatening injuries after stepping on a roadside bomb in Sangin, Afghanistan on Dec. 28, 2010. As with all homes constructed by Homes for Our Troops, Hayes received his at no cost. "Despite the daily challenges that I must face, I know that my home will not be an obstacle in my recovery," Hayes said. "I want to thank supporters like Veterans United and its employees for ensuring my family's livelihood by helping provide us with this gift." Sievers said Veterans United chose to support Homes for Troops as part of its mission to help veterans and active military find a place to call home. "We rely on partnerships throughout the country to build these homes," said Dawn Teixeira, executive director for Homes for Our Troops. "This commitment by Veterans United is crucial in the effort to rebuild the lives of our most severely wounded and injured veterans, and we appreciate the partnership with them."
