Flag Day 2012: Respect the Stars and Stripes (Video)

Happy Flag Day 2012! Veterans United Network writers Levi and Jeff take a few minutes to get you brushed up on proper care of your at-home flag.

Because there are a lot of rumors about the particulars of flag code, it is sometimes difficult to know how to properly take care of and respect the flag.  Flag Day is the perfect excuse to brush up on your flag protocol and trivia. Learn how to care for your at-home flag as well as some interesting flag code trivia.

Note that the following slide show depicts folding the flag in the triangular style. The folding is not exactly up to military standard, but this style is acceptable for at-home flag use.

Did You Know?

  • Large, outstretched flags at sporting events are actually a violation of official flag code, which states the flag should never be presented horizontally.
  • The United States flag cannot be flown on the same pole as a corporate flag.
  • In situations where there are multiple flagpoles of the same height, the United States flag should be flown on the pole farthest to the left.
  • For storage purposes, you can use a rectangular (blanket) fold, but for display a triangular fold is necessary.
  • The flag flying above the White House actually has nothing to do with whether the president or first family is home.
