A grenade attack killed Sgt. Denis Kisseloff of St. Charles, Mo. in 2010, but his legacy lives on through a new award. Sgt. Kisseloff’s children had previously lost their mother to an illness, so his passing left Aleks and Serena Kisseloff without parents.
“I thought God would spare him because of the kids,” said Mila Kisseloff, Sgt. Kisseloff’s mother.
Through a rain storm, members of Kisseloff’s Missouri National Guard Unit stood at attention as he was posthumously awarded the first-ever Veterans United Foundation’s “Hero Award.”
The award, which included a $50,000 check to pay for the Kisseloff kids’ college, also came with a surprise thrill: Aleks and Serena throwing out the first pitch of a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game.
