Veterans Can Qualify for Unemployment

Veterans and service members just separating from active duty who can’t find a job could qualify for unemployment compensation.

The transition back into civilian life is not easy, that’s why the Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Service members program (UCX) is there to help out on the financial front when those who serve separate from the military and prepare to move into the civilian workforce.

Are you eligible for unemployment benefits?

Make sure you check to see if you qualify for unemployment benefits.

In order to be eligible for the UCX program these three things must be true about you:

  • You were on active duty with a branch of the U.S. military
  • You separated under honorable conditions
  • There was/is no payroll deduction from your wages for unemployment insurance protection

For this particular program your benefits will be paid out by the various branches of the military, so if you accept unemployment compensation from any other source you might not qualify for the UCX program.

The amount you can receive varies by state. It’s usually best to call or visit your local unemployment office to learn more about what you may qualify for.

To apply bring Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214), your Social Security card and your military or civilian job history or resume.

My son was discharged on a General under honorable conditions and was told by legal and 3 others before he was released that he would be eligible for unemployment. However, he was denied his benefits by the state of Kansas because he did not complete his full contract. I find this pretty disgusting considering that civilians must only have had full time employment for 18 months prior to applying for unemployment, yet someone who is dismissed due to problems stemming from his war time experiences in Iraq cannot qualify. These men and women deserve the support of their Government while they make a transition to civilian life, especially when they spent a year in a war zone.
