Opt-Out of Credit Spam

Veterans United can help you guard against unsolicited credit offers.

Stop Unsolicited Offers

You can put a stop to junk mail offers that use your personal credit data — we make it easy.

Getting a mortgage often means getting swamped with unsolicited credit offers from insurance companies and other mortgage lenders. These companies buy your information from the credit bureaus and use it to send "prescreened" or "preapproved" firm offers of credit.

These unsolicited offers can pile up fast. Some bury costs and fees in fine print. Others try to make it seem like they’re already a company you do business with.

You have the right to opt-out of receiving these offers.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. 1

    Visit OptOutPrescreen.com

This is the official site for opting out of pre-screened offers. It’s a joint service among the nation’s major credit reporting agencies.

    Launch OptOutPrescreen.com

  2. 2

    Hit the button

Scroll to the bottom and press the “Click Here to Opt-in or Opt-out” button.

  3. 3

Choose "Electronic Opt-Out for 5 years"

On the next screen, select the "Electronic Opt-Out for 5 years" option and press "Continue."
If you would like to stop these offers permanently, you’ll have to print and mail a separate form.

  4. 4

    Submit your information

Provide some basic details and press "Confirm" to submit your request.
You can print or screenshot the confirmation page for your records. Your opt-out request can take five business days to process. But it might take a few months before prescreened offers stop arriving.

I would recommend anyone buying a home to opt out of the credit reporting agency releasing your personal information… I received 268 calls from [other] mortgage companies, and they are still calling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I opt-out over the phone?

Yes, you can call 1-888-567-8688 to opt-out of prescreened offers. Deaf and hard of hearing consumers can call 7-1-1 and refer the Relay Operator to 1-800-821-9631.

Does opting out affect my credit?

No, opting out of these offers does not impact your credit profile, your credit score or your ability to apply for and get new credit.

Why am I still getting pre-screened offers of credit after opting out?

The credit bureaus process your request within five business days. But you may continue to receive offers that result from an unsolicited credit pull for a few months before they stop. That’s because some companies may have purchased your information prior to your opt-out request but have yet to send you offers.

What if I have joint credit relationships, like with a spouse?

You and your spouse will each need to complete an opt-out request in order for both parties to stop receiving prescreened offers.
