As a first-time homebuyer, I expected a smoother and more transparent process than what I experienced. Unfortunately, communication and organization were lacking throughout my loan process.I strongly prefer email communication, but despite multiple requests, I was almost always met with voicemails instead. This made it harder to keep track of important information. I was sent several versions of the same documents to sign, which was confusing. At one point, I was even asked to re-verify my employment just two days before closing—something I wish I had been warned about much earlier in the process.Even more concerning, I personally caught a $10,000 error in my closing costs just five days before closing. When I brought this up, instead of recognizing it as their mistake, the team initially discussed restructuring my loan to include the additional fees. Only later did they realize it was an error on their end. That kind of oversight is unacceptable, especially when clients are paying fees for document preparation. As a first-time buyer, it would have made a huge difference to have a clear timeline of what documents to expect, when to expect them, and even guidance on things like taking time off work for closing. On a positive note, every interaction I had with staff was friendly and courteous. However, the lack of consistent communication and upfront explanation made what should have been an exciting milestone into a stressful and confusing experience. Veterans United could greatly improve by focusing on clear, timely communication—especially for those navigating the home-buying process for the first time.

Securing my first mortgage loan with Veterans United was a notably positive experience. The process was smooth and supportive throughout each stage. The team demonstrated exceptional professionalism, guiding me patiently and answering all of my questions with clarity. Their dedication to making the experience as straightforward as possible helped alleviate much of the stress typically associated with buying a home. I felt well-informed and confident in my decisions, thanks to their thorough explanations and consistent communication. Overall, Veterans United made my first home buying process not only manageable but genuinely rewarding.

I was impressed with the step-by-step support throughout the process, as well as the ease of reviewing documents and signing in to the MyVeterans United Portal. Communication is essential, especially for a first-time home buyer like myself.

My name is Justin Truman (Retired Veteran). This was my first time purchasing a home, and I used my VA home loan to do so. I didn’t know what to expect and was a bit intimidated—until I called Eric Johnson at Veterans United.
I looked it up online: Veterans United is the #1 Veterans Home Loan Lender in the world, and that’s for a good reason. I had searched far and wide for a lender who could offer the greatest loan amount, and as it turns out, it’s Veterans United! My credit score was around 640–660, and Veterans United approved me for up to $300,000. I was even told to contact Eric if I needed more. 😂
I found a home for $200,000, and Eric locked me in at 6.5%, which is amazing considering my last bankruptcy and credit history. He was always in contact with me, and if he was on the phone, he would always call me back. I could literally go to war for this dude—his service and professionalism are what I call next level.
His team even got together and went shopping for me for a housewarming present. The fact is, I expected the home-buying experience to be hectic, stressful, and overwhelming. Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Eric even provided me with a checklist (with links) throughout the entire process.
It was literally one of the best experiences of my entire life. I haven’t been this happy since my child was born—and that’s a fact. This man treated me as if I were his own son.
If you are a veteran who qualifies for a VA home loan, it would behoove you to contact Eric. And when you do, tell him I said hello.

Kyle was the person charged with helping us and wouldn't answer my calls. When he did he would try and make excuses as to why we went back to underwriting or why certain amounts were on the closing disclosure. He is either unedjucated in his current position or too scared to take his position serious and represent me and get answers from other departments. This isnt my first va loan and this was the worst experience i've ever had. My realestate agent and my self and atorney had came up with a perfect plan to remedy the plumbing and water damage repair costs and situation. But Kyle instead sent us back to underwriting for an escrow hold which underwriting ended up denying and later Kyle ended up passing us off to uper management who went with our original plan. This wasted costed us significant out of pocket cost that we werent prepaired for. As well as wasted everyones time. Closing was pushed back and costed us our payout at closing to significantly decrease and be applied to interest on a property i didn't even step foot into yet.

Response from Veterans United

Hi Cameron,
I’m really sorry to hear this VA loan experience was so difficult, especially since you’ve been through the process before and knew what to expect. I can understand how upsetting it must have been to face delays, confusion about underwriting decisions, and unexpected costs that caught you off guard. It sounds like you, your realtor, and your attorney put in a lot of effort to create a plan to handle the repair costs, and I regret that it wasn’t followed at first. I know that back-and-forth only added to the stress, pushed your closing back, and left you with added financial strain at a time when you should have been focused on settling into your new home. Closing on a home should feel like a positive milestone, not a burden, and I’m sorry that wasn’t your experience here.
