Veteran "benefits" are a royal pain to utilize and this was the hardest "benefit" I've ever used - though not my first VA loan. My closing date was barely met, and only succeeded because I kicked, screamed, and fought my way to the end. The underwriting department dragged their feet until the last possible second and left me in the dark the whole way through. I found out only 7 hours before closing day that I'd made it. Throughout the process, I was repeatedly asked for documentation I'd already provided (typically within 30 minutes of the first request) and many of my questions were met with vague or no answers. My out of pocket cost responsibility remained a mystery until closing day with (gue)stimates ranging +/- $5k in each document. I don't know or care who or what is responsible for each failure, I just know there were many... and this was a miserable process as a result. No, I absolutely would NOT recommend this to anyone, friend or foe. In the end, I got my house, but this is the last time I use the "benefits" I gave up 6 years of my life to obtain. For the sake of the rest those that fought for your freedom (to be lazy), please fix yourselves.
