I was very happy to have chosen Veterans United Home Loans as my home lender. Veterans United was well organized, their staff was more than willing to help, and the process was fast and easy as long as I was staying in clear communication with my Loan Specialist and submitting documents in a timely manner. Working together as a team was key to getting a home loan and I'm very thankful for the team I had in Veterans United.

The underwriting process was beyond anything we had previously experienced, and I do not mean that in a good way. Redundancies aside, we were asked about things that were not on our credit report; for example, a second that was paid off years ago. We had to submit 12 months of billing for the solar energy system on our roof because Solar City does not report to credit reporting agencies. Because of things like this, the loan process went a week past the rate lock, so it had to be extended. To be clear, we responded immediately to each request from underwriting, no matter how frivolous it seemed.Additionally, the day of closing, we received a call from the title company saying the termite report had not been included in our signing papers. It had to be emailed to us to sign in order to close that day. (This after the notary was sent blank papers on the day of signing. We had to reschedule for later in the day so she could receive the complete set of documents.) By the way, the day after closing we received a FedEx delivery containing checks for the payments that were part of the final loan for us to distribute. The irony here is that one of the underwriter's last-minute requests was a copy of a credit card statement that showed the address where the payment would be sent.

It exceeded our expectations and then some. The web site and mobile app made document downloads a breeze and was a quick way to check on our loan status.

The process was challenging the entire time. I started this process early in the year and provided all the documentation to be pre-approved including submitting my DD214. We contracted to by a home and were finalizing everything for underwriting when my loan officer informed me I wasn't eligible for a VA loan even though I had used VA to buy a home in 2001. After spending hours on the phone with the VA I found out about some obscure rules change since my last use. What was disappointing was my loan officer waited till I was in contract before he requested a certificate of eligibility. I assumed he had already done that. Had I known I wasn't eligible from the beginning I would have made different decisions. We had to entirely switch loan products after we were already in contract. This caused many delays and headaches for us and the buyers. In the end Veterans United really helped us out and got us funded when they could have just said sorry but we can't help you. I do appreciate the heroics at the end.
